MOA and MRAD are not competing levels of accuracy. They are two angular languages that describe the same job: measuring a correction and applying it consistently.

If you are buying your first precision riflescope, the abbreviations can make the decision feel harder than it is. The practical answer is simple: choose one system, match the reticle to the turrets, set your ballistic data to the same unit, and practice until the numbers feel natural.

The short version: MOA is often easier for an American shooter who already visualizes inches at 100 yards. MRAD is often easier for a shooter who wants decimal-based corrections or trains with a group that speaks in mils. Neither system makes the rifle, ammunition or shooter more accurate by itself.

What is MOA?

MOA stands for Minute of Angle. A circle contains 360 degrees, and each degree contains 60 minutes. That means one MOA is 1/60 of one degree.

Because MOA is an angular measurement, the amount it covers grows with distance. One true MOA spans approximately:

  • 1.047 inches at 100 yards
  • 2.094 inches at 200 yards
  • 5.235 inches at 500 yards
  • 10.47 inches at 1,000 yards

At normal zeroing distances, many shooters use the convenient approximation of “one MOA equals one inch at 100 yards.” That shortcut is usually close enough for basic range work, but ballistic calculators and precision data use the true angular value.

How 1/4-MOA clicks work

Many MOA scopes adjust in 1/4-MOA clicks. At 100 yards, one click moves the point of impact about 0.26 inch. Four clicks equal one MOA, or about 1.05 inches at 100 yards.

If a ballistic solution calls for 7.5 MOA of elevation and your scope uses 1/4-MOA clicks, you dial 30 clicks. Once you stop converting everything back into inches and begin thinking directly in MOA, the process becomes much faster.

What is MRAD?

MRAD stands for milliradian. Shooters often shorten it to “mil.” One milliradian is one-thousandth of a radian, and the system works cleanly in tenths.

One MRAD spans approximately 3.6 inches at 100 yards. At metric distances, one MRAD spans 10 centimeters at 100 meters. A common 0.1-MRAD turret click therefore moves the point of impact:

  • 0.36 inch at 100 yards
  • 0.72 inch at 200 yards
  • 1.8 inches at 500 yards
  • 3.6 inches at 1,000 yards

At 100 meters, one 0.1-MRAD click equals one centimeter. The distance units can change—yards and inches or meters and centimeters—as long as the relationship remains consistent.

How 0.1-MRAD clicks work

Ten 0.1-MRAD clicks equal 1.0 MRAD. If your ballistic solution calls for 2.2 MRAD of elevation, you dial 22 clicks. A spotter can also communicate a correction such as “0.4 mil right,” and the shooter can dial or hold exactly 0.4 MRAD without converting it into inches.

The most important rule: match the reticle and turrets

The easiest setup to learn is MOA reticle with MOA turrets or MRAD reticle with MRAD turrets. This is often called a matching system.

Suppose you see that an impact landed 0.6 MRAD low through an MRAD reticle. With matching MRAD turrets, you can dial 0.6 MRAD—six clicks on a 0.1-MRAD scope—or hold the 0.6-MRAD mark. There is no conversion step.

A mixed system can still function, but it forces you to translate between units. One MRAD is approximately 3.44 MOA, and one MOA is approximately 0.291 MRAD. That math adds time and creates another opportunity for an error. For a new shooter, matching units are the smarter buy.

Your ballistic calculator, range card, spotting reticle and scope should also use the same angular language. Consistency is more valuable than debating which system is theoretically better.

MOA or MRAD: which should you choose?

Choose MOA when:

  • You already think comfortably in inches and yards.
  • Your current scopes, range partners or hunting group already use MOA.
  • You prefer the familiar “about one inch at 100 yards” mental shortcut.
  • The reticle and scope model you want are available in a matching MOA configuration.

Choose MRAD when:

  • You prefer decimal-based adjustments.
  • Your instructor, spotter, competition squad or shooting partners use MRAD.
  • You want corrections communicated in short values such as 0.3 or 1.2 mils.
  • The reticle and scope model you want are available in a matching MRAD configuration.

Do not choose based on these myths

  • “MRAD is only metric.” It works with yards and inches as easily as meters and centimeters.
  • “MOA is only for hunters.” MOA is used successfully in precision and competition shooting.
  • “MRAD is more accurate.” Both are angular systems capable of precise corrections.
  • “A finer click automatically produces better groups.” Click size is only one small part of the complete rifle, optic, ammunition and shooter system.

Learn one system before trying to master both

A new shooter will improve faster by building one repeatable process than by constantly converting between MOA and MRAD. Use this practice plan:

  1. Confirm your equipment. Verify the reticle unit, turret unit and click value in the scope manual.
  2. Set your ballistic app. Change the output to the same unit as the scope.
  3. Zero carefully. Shoot a group, measure the group center, calculate one correction and confirm with another group.
  4. Record every correction. Keep a simple range notebook or verified digital data card.
  5. Practice dialing and holding. Learn to use both methods without changing angular systems.
  6. Use the same vocabulary. Communicate wind and elevation in MOA or MRAD—not a mixture of clicks, inches and guessed target widths.

Is MOA or MRAD better for hunting?

Either can work well. MOA may feel more familiar to hunters who think in inches and yards. MRAD may be the better choice if your existing gear, ballistic data or hunting partners already use mils. Matching the system across your equipment matters more than the label.

Is MOA or MRAD better for long-range shooting?
