Woman to woman, let’s keep this practical: children change the margin for error. A plan must work on the busiest, most distracted day—not only when everything is calm.
Education is valuable, but it never replaces locked storage and adult control.
Separate access from curiosity
Store firearms unloaded and locked when not under the direct control of an authorized adult, consistent with law and manufacturer guidance. Secure ammunition appropriately.
Use a safe or lock box children cannot operate, and never reveal combinations casually.
Build household rules
- Children never touch a firearm without an authorized adult. I tell my kids to treat it like a rattle snake. It is just as dangerous.
- They leave the area and tell an adult if they find one
- Adults verify storage every time
- Guests’ firearms follow the same plan
Repeat rules in age-appropriate language without making the firearm mysterious or accessible.
Plan transitions
The greatest risk may occur when a carried firearm comes off the body. Decide exactly where it goes before entering the house, changing clothes or sleeping.
Include babysitters, relatives and visiting children in the access plan without disclosing unnecessary security details.
From one woman to another

Responsible ownership is a chain of small consistent actions. The plan should never depend on a child remembering perfectly.

Safety note: Follow all applicable storage laws. Prevent access by children, prohibited persons and unauthorized users; education does not replace secure storage.
