Revolver Buying Guide: Find the Right Revolver

Revolvers range from lightweight concealed-carry models to full-size range, field, hunting, and collectible firearms. Compare frame size, action type, caliber, barrel length, capacity, sights, and recoil before selecting one.

1. Choose the Intended Use

  • Carry: prioritize manageable size, weight, secure handling, and a grip that fits.
  • Range and general use: medium-frame models often balance comfort, durability, and recoil control.
  • Field and hunting: larger frames and longer barrels can support powerful calibers and improved sight radius.
  • Rimfire training: .22 LR revolvers provide low recoil and lower ammunition cost.

2. Understand the Action

  • Double-action/single-action: can be fired with a longer double-action trigger press or by manually cocking the hammer for a lighter single-action press.
  • Double-action-only: commonly uses an enclosed or bobbed hammer and provides the same trigger operation for each shot.
  • Single-action: requires the hammer to be manually cocked before each shot and is common on traditional-style revolvers.

3. Select a Frame and Barrel Size

Small frames are easier to carry but can concentrate recoil. Medium frames are versatile. Large frames support larger cylinders and more powerful calibers. Longer barrels generally add weight, velocity, and sight radius; shorter barrels are more compact.

4. Choose a Caliber

.22 LR is suitable for economical practice and recreational shooting. .38 Special is common in compact revolvers. Many .357 Magnum revolvers can also use .38 Special, but always verify the manufacturer marking. Larger calibers such as .44 Magnum and .45 Colt require careful consideration of recoil, firearm weight, ammunition cost, and intended lawful use.

5. Grip, Sights, and Capacity

A secure grip is essential because revolver shape, grip material, and backstrap exposure strongly affect recoil comfort. Compare fixed versus adjustable sights and confirm cylinder capacity, typically five to eight rounds depending on frame and caliber.

6. Complete the Setup

Plan for a proper case, eye and hearing protection, cleaning equipment, speedloaders or loading strips where compatible, suitable ammunition, and professional instruction.
