How to Zero a Rifle Scope: A Beginner’s Step-by-Step Guide

A good zero is a repeatable relationship between the rifle, optic and chosen ammunition—not simply one lucky shot touching the bullseye.

Zeroing becomes much easier when you use a stable position, fire groups instead of chasing individual impacts, and make one measured correction at a time. Before starting, verify that the optic is mounted securely, the bore is unobstructed and the ammunition matches the firearm.

Read the scope manual and confirm its adjustment unit and click value. Most sporting scopes use quarter-MOA clicks, while many precision scopes use 0.1-MRAD clicks. Set the eyepiece so the reticle appears immediately sharp with a relaxed eye, then establish comfortable eye relief without crawling forward on the stock.

Inspect the bases, rings and fasteners. A loose base, uneven ring pressure or contact between the objective bell and barrel can make a consistent zero impossible. Use the torque values supplied by the firearm, base, ring and optic manufacturers rather than guessing.

  • Confirm the correct ammunition and safe backstop.
  • Use a stable rest or bags that allow consistent recoil.
  • Begin at a distance where impacts can be identified safely.

Bore-sight to get the first group on paper

Bore-sighting is a preliminary alignment step, not a finished zero. With a bolt-action rifle, the bore can often be visually aligned with a target while the rifle remains supported. A compatible laser boresight can also help. Follow the boresight manufacturer’s directions and remove the device before loading or firing.

The purpose is simply to save ammunition by getting the first group onto the target. It does not account for the difference between the bore line and sight line, ammunition behavior or normal variation between shots.

Fire a group and correct the group center

Fire a careful three- or five-shot group while maintaining the same position and aiming point. Measure from the desired point of impact to the center of the group—not to the closest hole. Translate that distance into the scope’s angular unit and move elevation and windage in the direction marked on the turrets.

Make the full calculated correction once. Constantly adjusting after every shot often creates confusion because individual shots include normal shooter, rifle and ammunition variation.

  • At 100 yards, one true MOA is approximately 1.047 inches.
  • At 100 yards, 0.1 MRAD is approximately 0.36 inch.
  • Allow the barrel to cool if heat begins changing group behavior.

Confirm the zero and record it

Fire another group after the correction. If its center is where intended, repeat the confirmation under the same conditions. A dependable zero should survive normal turret operation and, when the optic supports it, a return-to-zero check.

Record the rifle, optic, ammunition, distance and environmental conditions. Reconfirm after changing ammunition, removing the optic, making mounting changes or noticing an unexplained shift. A final confirmation near the beginning of hunting season is also smart.

Use a measured group-centered process and resist chasing individual holes. If the point of impact will not respond predictably, stop and inspect the mounting system, ammunition and equipment before using more turret travel.
